Perry, Matthew C. Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron
Washington: A. O. P. Nicholson by order of Congress 1856, 3 volume set, 1st edition. Volume I of 537pp constitutes a narrative of the expedition of an American squadron to the China Seas and Japan, in the years 1852-53-54, under the command of Commodore M. C. Perry, USN, with 89 tinted lithographs and 76 woodcuts. Volume II consists of various papers from original notes and journals of Commodore Perry and his officers, edited under his supervision by Francis L. Hawks, with large folded charts and maps. Volume III consists of observations on the zodiacal light, from April 1853 to April 1855 made chiefly on board the US steam-frigate Mississippi, with conclusions from the data by Rev. George Jones, Chaplain USN. This is the Congressional edition, preceding the first trade edition which appeared in New York in 1857; it includes the unlisted and controversial nude bathing scene 'Public Bath at Shimoda.' This set has been professionally rebound in full leather with 'House of Reps' and 'Navy Dept' blind stamped at head and heel, spine labels with titles and volume number, and raised bands; all plates are present and in good shape except for light chipping on some edges, one 5-digit number on prefatory pages, no foxing, all plates are clean and bright. A very nice copy of the report of an historic US Navy expedition in extraordinarily beautiful soft beige leather; an excellent investment or a handsome gift. Price:
