Thompson, Winfield Lawson History of the America's Cup, The
Boston: Privately published by Thomas Lawson 1902, edition LIMITED to 3000 numbered copies, of which this is No. 41. Co-author Thomas Lawson of Boston, owner of the yacht Independence, was refused by the New York Yacht Club the right to compete for the defense of the Cup; the resulting controversy prompted him to record these events in full, but as part of a comprehensive history of the Cup written independently by Winfield Thompson who authored the first 275 pages, Lawson did the final 50 pages. No dust jacket, large 4to (8x12), in heavy white canvas, with titles and ornate decoration gilt-stamped on front board, spine gilt-stamped with black leather title label pasted down, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed, 89 half-tone plates including frontis, appendix with Cup data, index, 402pp, spine a bit age-darkened, new endpapers and binding tightened recently, a few small tears in lower margins presumably from cutting pages open, no marks and no foxing, all plates clear, overall a Very Good copy of a yachting classic, copies of which typically are loose or damaged due to its excessive weight.
