4 Gill, Leonard J. My Two Years in the Navy

unpublished c1920. Gill was, so far as we know, an ordinary American navy man, who served his country faithfully; although awarded no special honors, he felt compelled to record some of his wartime experiences for posterity by means of a story and a scrapbook. His album is ragged and broken, with some pictures and several pages of narrative missing, yet the clippings, photographs and words reach out to us across the years. Stiff board covers, oblong 12mo (10x7.25) cord-laced, chipped photos pasted down on front and rear boards, 30 b&w photos (nearly all of ships) most with explanatory captions, many photos from books or magazines, several poems and clippings, typewritten notes and seven pages of narrative, beginning with his enlistment in June of 1917 and ending (abruptly) in August of 1918. For those interested in personal accounts of naval service in WWI, this album offers a unique insight.
